3D Builder titanium membrane – A new generation of titanium membranes in bone augmentation

It is often necessary to replace thinned bone before implantation. One of the most effective methods for bone grafting is to use a titanium membrane. The opinion of a professional regarding the utilization of the BIONIKA 3D Builder titanium membrane

“In everyday practice, we are often forced to apply some type of bone graft when working with enosseal implants. We speak of lateral augmentation when the width of the processus alveolaris is not sufficient to accommodate the implant, therefore making bone grafting necessary. If the bone volumes are enough to provide adequate primary stability, but the side of the implant – generally the vestibular side – is not covered by bone, the uncovered titanium surface must be covered with autologous or alloplastic bone substitutes.

The use of own spongiosa shavings, in contrast to mixtures of titanium alloplastic and alloplastic-autologous material, clearly leads to the best results when it comes to the restoration of the supplemented augmentatio, both in terms of healing time and bone consistency. However, the disadvantage compared to the previous two is that, during the healing period (3 months), the purely properietary bone augmentatio can encounter significant loss to its volume, therefore the crestally implanted and augmented implant can become relatively supracrestal. 

The previously used titanium membranes were unable to overcharge the augmentatio without the support of separate spacers and extra subparts, therefore they were not suitable for the compensation of the volume involution. This deficiency is eliminated by BIONIKA’s 3D Builder, which enables the “over-augmentation” of the implant to become relatively subcrestal. Thus, even with the incorporation of purely autologous spongiosa shavings, the implant will be in the crestal position after the osseointegration time has elapsed and the titanium membrane has been removed.

Based on my experience, in accordance with the current state of technology, I consider the 3D Builder titanium membrane produced by BIONIKA Medline Kft., which can be fixed using the implant’s locking screw, as the best solution, and I recommend it to the attention of all implantologists for day-to-day practical applications, and for cases when bone grafting is done at the same as implantation.
